In the previous blog we listed the most important house rules in Germany. We would like to reiterate that it is very important to respect each and every one of the house rules for the sake of peace and good interpersonal relations. Admittedly, just as we have buildings where the tenants follow the rules strictly because there are several generations in the same building with different needs, we also have buildings where the tenants are mostly young people and students with a similar pace and way of life and therefore do not need strict rules. More liberal house rules are more common in large cities, where people have a greater choice of places to live and can choose apartments in buildings where their neighbors meet at least some of the criteria, they also have more opportunities to find roommates, especially if they choose to live in neighborhoods where students and young people predominate. If you are the type of person who prefers a more laid-back lifestyle, these are five cities that might be right for you.

Berlin: As the capital of Germany, it exudes liberalism and diversity. You will see people of all profiles, styles and many internationals, with young people and students being the leading group. This is why it is known for a different way of life, both artistically and urbanistically. This has made Berlin seem like it doesn’t have such strict housing rules. Since the city is full of life with many different social groups, it is not uncommon for them to rent rooms or apartments together.

Hamburg: A city with a large port, known for its openness and diversity. This gives it a great deal of flexibility in how people use their living spaces. Especially when it comes to artists and students, both local and international.

Leipzig: Leipzig is a popular city among creative young people and students attending numerous universities. They love it for its easy and relaxed lifestyle and good “vibe”. It gained popularity among the aforementioned population because it is considered a cheaper version of almost all major cities throughout Germany, making it a perfect alternative to big cities and attracting people who like a more casual lifestyle.

Freiburg: This is the “greenest” city in Germany, and all of its residents are committed to ecology and a healthy lifestyle. The same goals and priorities of the population have led to an unusual and specific way of living together, such as living in co-housing communities or eco-villages. This city attracts individuals and groups who prefer an ecological lifestyle.

Cologne: This city has a close-knit community with a lively nightlife, traditional festivals and culture. This allows residents a completely relaxed and easy approach to life. For them, this means more relaxed rules when it comes to shared living spaces and sharing with fellow citizens.
